Remains of the ancient agora, Smyrna, modern Izmir, Turkey. |
The Trajanum, Pergamum. Among the seven churches for which John had a letter was Pergamum, "where Satan has his throne".

In the Agora, or great marketplace, of ancient Athens, Paul debated daily with Epicurean and Stoic philosophers, probably in a colonnade such as the Stoa of Attalus. The Court of the Areopagus, where Paul defended his views on Jesus and the resurrection, probably met in the Royal Colonnade.
The monumental gateway, or Propylaea, leading to the Parthenon, Athens.
The impressive fluted columns of the Propylaea, the Acropolis, Athens.
This headon view of the Parthenon emphasizes its finely dimensioned structure. |
The restored Stoa of Attalus, seen from the Acropolis. Recent research suggests that it may have been here that Paul addresses the Court (or meeting) of the Areopagus. |
